Well I didn't see the part where the yippies were breaking windows of cars on Michigan Ave. parked in front of the Conrad Hilton, of the Conrad and moving north, breaking glass in other establishments. That was when the police charge took off from the north headed south down Michigan to confront them. Loved the fools that climbed up into the trees. But I can watch that 100 times and not get tired of it or be disturbed by it. Baltimore is what happened when the police are not aggressive against criminals demonstrating under the guise of peaceful protest; as we all saw in Baltimore. Secondy, our Mayor now is more like the Mayor of Baltimore and Chicago than old man Daley was. Both Chicago and Baltimore have a couple of assholes for Mayors now.

In case anyone doesn't know already, those are leaders (notice they are in front leading and supporting) in the White shirts, those fine looking men in the Blue shirts (notice they are following their leaders) are Police Officers! They are POLICING a situation where some citizens did not want to follow lawful orders (civil unrest/rioting/ or in today's terms organized protesting) and they took control. That is how you maintain law and order. I know most of us get it, just helping out a few who don't (and probably never will) get it.

We have the lawful authority to keep the street and public passages open and flowing for use by all. Protesters have no right, nor authority to obstruct the public way. They can protest all they want, THAT is their constitutionally guaranteed right, and rightfully so. Keep shouting, chanting and carrying signs to establish your point, and attempt to make change, but keep moving and keep the public way flowing. If not; fall in on me-- Drumstep, Drumstep, move move move, jab, jab, jab, grab, pull to the rear and arrest.

There are many excellent comments on here, but there are few that discredit what actually happened. Many police knew someone who was there that night. I do believe it looks like fun, but there would be guns, gangs, and black bloc in the protestors now. Looks like some cops could have easily been swept up in the crowd. But then there is this comment that goes beyond pride on this job and discredits the whole thread-

"My dad was one of the officers working that night. Great video. That's what should happen to the protesters today too."

I'm not discrediting your father. I have a problem with the fact that you said "that's what should happen to the protestors today too." That is the pure opposite of what this country stands for. If you protest your government you are exercising your constitutional right. As cops as a whole, we need to get thicker skin. Protestors are not bad. Vandalism and destruction of property discredits the protest. To say you would like to do this to protestors shows your ignorance to what was happening at the time. I have been on both sides of these lines. I bet you never served in the military ( just a guess) but your comment points more toward someone who just wanted to be a cop, but ended up in the wrong era. You are not your dad. If you do this to ptotestors now, it may be fun, but undermines the fundamental foundation this country was founded on. I'm not saying that pieces of shit on a day to day basis don't need the shit knocked out of them, but in situations like this, talk all the shit you want, just don't touch me. When the order to clear the street is given, clear the street. Refusal to move, grab, drag back, arrest- next. Line moves forward like a vacuum. Grab people who throw shit. If you can't, duck and move on.

12:21pm - Yes sir, there were NO fatalities in Chicago but 4 were killed during the Republican convention rioting in Miami. The lame stream media back then supported Nixon instead of Humphrey because of CPD's tactics and Lyndon Johnson's continuation of the bombing in Vietnam.
To this day, the convention is described as a police riot & Miami is never even mentioned.

Let's not compare protesters from the 60's to protesters of today. In the 60's they wanted confrontations and a fight. Prior to the convention protesters gathered and practiced tactics. Protesters have the right to protest within the law. Get a permit and abide by your protest permit. Laying down in the street, looting, arson, blocking the doors to merchants places of business are not lawful protest they are law breaking protest. Your right to protest does not give you the right to disrupt the lives of working tax paying residents. The police should beat you and your law breaking savages into submission. This would not be called a police state it would be called a lawful civilized society. When your arrested for just speaking out against authority without breaking any laws, that would be a police state. Get a job and provide for yourself and those you created and you will soon appreciate the service provided by the police.

"Today the protestors aren't usually armed." Hell yes they are!
Urine filled jars, rocks they bring with them or pre-plant, razor knives to cut the bridles or legs of police horses and even fiebombs. Yes many do come armed and will mixed in with a non-violent group, do damage, whip them up then escape into the crowd after goading cops into reactions caught on video.
